Place
Sourced solely from the famed Mort’s Block Vineyard in the Clare Valley sub-region of Watervale, the Mort’s 1973 is a true expression of this revered single vineyard. The vines were planted in 1973, into red loamy topsoil over a deep limestone base and east-west row orientation creating the perfect resource from which to craft this wine.
Vintage Conditions
The early flowering of 2024 was ideal for this cooler season as the fruit had additional time to full ripen in the mild summer. These cooler conditions slowed the ripening of the grapes, resulting in bright varietal flavours, crisp natural acidities, and lower sugar concentrations at picking than prior seasons.
Winemaking
Fruit for this Reserve wine was picked on the 12th of February. The whole bunches were then gently pressed, and the free-run juice cold settled for three days before being racked to stainless-steel tanks for fermentation. The fermentation was undertaken at low
temperatures and continued for 17 days naturally finishing dry. The wine was then chilled and allowed to naturally clarify.

2024 Mort's 1973 Single Vineyard Watervale Riesling
Overview
An icon of the Kilikanoon stable, this refined wine is an ode to the place, its people and their vision. This wine used to be named after our founding winemaker’s father, Mort who established many of the original vineyards of Kilikanoon. Now, this single vineyard Riesling is an ode to the old vine Riesling block from which it is picked. It is grown, fermented and cellared with the sole purpose to capture the essence of this famed Watervale vineyard.Place

Subtle aromas of white peach blossom, kaffir lime and soft

Palate
Focused and bright, this wine fills the mouth with a chalky palate with notes of lemon-lime. Delicate yet powerful. Boasting notes of the classic Watervale sweetened lime pith and limestone minerality, freshness carries this wine through to the quinine finish, underpinned by the natural acidity which drives length and longevity.
After tasting this Riesling, I'm sticking my neck out, and saying it's the best Riesling out of the Clare Valley. Just extraordinary minimality, citrus and lime and such a beautiful long palate.
Just delightful - well done Kilikanoon!
