Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: The Unsung Hero Worth Discovering

Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: The Unsung Hero Worth Discovering

Mention Clare Valley and most people immediately think of Riesling. Others head straight for Shiraz. Both have earned their place in the spotlight.

But quietly, vintage after vintage, another variety has been producing exceptional wines in the region: Cabernet Sauvignon.

It's one of Clare Valley's best-kept secrets.

While neighbouring regions have built their reputations on Cabernet Sauvignon, Clare Valley has been crafting elegant, expressive examples for decades. Thanks to warm days, cool nights and a long, even growing season, Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon develops concentrated black fruit flavours, fine tannins and natural freshness, creating wines that are equally enjoyable in their youth or after years in the cellar.

At Kilikanoon, Cabernet Sauvignon has been part of our story from the very beginning.

When Kilikanoon released its very first wines in 1997, Blocks Road Cabernet Sauvignon was among them. Nearly three decades later, Cabernet remains an important part of our portfolio, reflecting not only our heritage but also our belief in the variety's important place in Clare Valley.

It has never been about following trends. It's about producing wines that genuinely express place.

Over the years we've continued to champion Cabernet Sauvignon through a collection that offers something for every occasion, from relaxed weeknight dinners to bottles worthy of a place in the cellar.

One Region. Four Distinct Expressions.

Every Cabernet tells a different story.

Killerman's Run Cabernet Sauvignon is vibrant, approachable and full of classic blackcurrant fruit, making it an easy choice for sharing with friends around the barbecue or alongside a Sunday roast.

Our Blocks Road Cabernet Sauvignon carries special significance. Not only was it one of our original releases, but it continues to showcase the structure, elegance and longevity that have become hallmarks of Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

For those seeking greater depth and complexity, Tregea Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon represents our finest expression of the variety. Powerful yet refined, it rewards patience while remaining unmistakably Clare Valley in style.

And then there's Morrison Cabernet Shiraz - a blend that brings together two Australian classics. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure, cassis and savoury complexity, while Shiraz adds richness, dark fruit and spice. Together, they create a wine that's generous, balanced and incredibly food-friendly.

One of the defining characteristics of Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is its balance.

Rather than overwhelming power, the wines combine concentrated fruit with natural acidity and fine tannins. Expect flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum, layered with subtle notes of mint, cedar and spice. The result is Cabernet that feels vibrant, elegant and unmistakably regional.

It's a style that pairs beautifully with food, whether that's grilled lamb, chargrilled beef, mushroom dishes or aged cheddar shared over a long lunch.

Kilikanoon's Insider Tips for Enjoying Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon:

> Serve it slightly below room temperature.
Cabernet Sauvignon is at its best served at around 16-18°C. If the bottle has been sitting in a warm house, pop it in the fridge for 15-20 minutes before opening to let the fruit and aromatics shine.

> Give it a little air.
Both young (and older) Cabernet Sauvignon benefit from 30-60 minutes in a decanter, allowing the wine to soften and reveal more of its dark fruit and savoury complexity.

> Don't be afraid to cellar it.
One of the joys of Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is its ability to age gracefully. While many bottles are delicious on release, premium wines such as Tregea Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon will continue to develop beautifully over the years, rewarding patience with added complexity and finesse.

> Love Shiraz? Try Cabernet.
If your go-to wine is Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon is a natural next step. You'll still enjoy generous dark fruit, but with firmer structure, finer tannins and a savoury edge that makes it an exceptional food wine.

International Cabernet Sauvignon Day is the perfect excuse to revisit a variety that has quietly been producing remarkable wines in Clare Valley for generations.

While Riesling and Shiraz may continue to steal the headlines, Cabernet Sauvignon has earned its place alongside them. At Kilikanoon, it's a variety we've believed in since our very first vintage, and one we're proud to continue crafting today.

If it's been a while since you've poured a glass of Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, perhaps now is the time to discover one of the region's best-kept secrets!
