Grenache in the Clare Valley: The Rising Star of South Australian Wine

Grenache in the Clare Valley: The Rising Star of South Australian Wine

For decades, Clare Valley's reputation has been built on Riesling and Shiraz. Those varieties remain central to the region's identity, but another grape has been quietly building momentum: Grenache.

Once best known as a blending variety, Grenache is now one of the most exciting wines being produced in the Clare Valley. Elegant yet powerful, expressive yet approachable, it has captured the attention of winemakers, sommeliers and wine lovers alike.

At Kilikanoon, we've believed in Grenache for a long time. Today, we're proud to be the largest producer of Grenache in the Clare Valley, crafting a diverse collection of wines that showcase just how versatile this remarkable variety can be.

As wine drinkers increasingly seek lighter, more vibrant red wines, Grenache is proving a natural fit. While some describe it as Clare Valley's answer to Pinot Noir, we think that's selling it short. Grenache offers something uniquely its own - combining generosity of flavour with freshness, layers of red fruit and spice, and exceptional drinkability.

A Variety with Deep Clare Valley Roots

Grenache is far from a new arrival in the Clare Valley. Some of the region's oldest vineyards were planted generations ago, including vines dating back to 1946 that continue to contribute fruit to Kilikanoon wines today.

While the variety spent many years destined for fortified wines or blends, winemakers are increasingly recognising its ability to produce outstanding standalone wines. The result is a new generation of Clare Valley Grenache that is vibrant, elegant and unmistakably regional.

What Does Clare Valley Grenache Taste Like?

Grenache is one of the most expressive red wine varieties you'll encounter.

Typical flavours include:

  • Raspberry
  • Wild strawberry
  • Red cherry
  • Spice
  • Dried herbs
  • Earthy savoury notes

Most Clare Valley Grenache sits comfortably in the medium-bodied category. It offers plenty of flavour and texture without becoming heavy, making it one of Australia's most food-friendly red wines.

Grenache and Food: A Perfect Match

Grenache's versatility extends well beyond the glass. Its vibrant fruit and moderate tannins make it a natural partner for food, particularly dishes that can overwhelm lighter reds but don't require the power of a full-bodied Shiraz.

Some favourite pairings include:

  • Roast lamb
  • Chargrilled pork
  • Duck
  • Mediterranean vegetables
  • Mushroom dishes
  • Charcuterie
  • Wood-fired pizza

What Is GSM?

One of the reasons Grenache has become so popular is its role in GSM blends.

GSM stands for Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre (also known as Mataro), a classic blend originating in France's Rhône Valley.

Grenache brings perfume and red fruit, Shiraz contributes structure and richness, while Mourvèdre adds savoury complexity.

Together, they create wines that are balanced, layered and exceptionally enjoyable to drink.
