At this year's Clare Valley Gourmet Festival, we poured three consecutive vintages of The Oracle Shiraz side by side. Same vineyard. Same winemaking philosophy.
Yet each wine told a different story.
Some showed more power. Others more finesse. Together, they demonstrated why wine lovers are so fascinated by vintage variation.
Which raises an interesting question: how much does a vintage really matter?
For many wine drinkers, a wine vintage is little more than a date on the label. But for wine enthusiasts, it can offer a fascinating glimpse into the season that shaped the wine in your glass.
A vintage simply refers to the year the grapes were grown and harvested. And while vineyards may remain unchanged from one year to the next, nature rarely does. Some seasons favour power and concentration. Others produce wines with greater elegance and freshness.
Even in a region as consistent as Clare Valley, vintage variation can have a noticeable impact on the style and personality of a wine.
But does that mean one vintage is "better" than another? Not necessarily.

The Oracle vertical tasting was a perfect example. The vineyard hadn't changed. The winemaking philosophy hadn't changed. Yet each vintage reflected the season in its own way.
It's also why certain wines are only produced in exceptional years.
Take our Attunga 1865 Shiraz. Crafted from some of Clare Valley's oldest dry-grown vines, our Attunga 1865 Shiraz is not made every vintage. In some years, the wine simply doesn't reach the standard required to carry the Attunga name. Sometimes the most important winemaking decision is choosing not to make a wine at all.
For producers committed to quality, vintage matters because it shapes what is possible. Some years naturally lend themselves to wines of extraordinary concentration, balance and longevity. Others may produce wines with a different personality entirely.
Neither approach is right or wrong. They're simply reflections of the season.
Of course, vintage is only one part of the story.
Another common misconception is that white wines should be drunk young, while red wines are the ones worth cellaring. In reality, it depends on the wine.
Many whites are best enjoyed young. But some wines can evolve remarkably with age. Clare Valley Riesling is a perfect example.
As young wines, Rieslings are often prized for their vibrant citrus notes, floral aromatics and refreshing acidity. With time, those characteristics can transform, developing greater texture, complexity and the distinctive bottle-aged characters that many Riesling lovers seek out.
The result isn't necessarily a better wine. Just a different one.

So, do wine vintages matter? Absolutely. Not because one number on a label is inherently better than another, but because every vintage captures a moment in time.
