Pinot Gris is often seen as a temperamental variety so when ideal growing conditions produce full and evenly ripened bunches that are flavour rich before they overly sweeten – an exceptional wine is produced. The 2024 Skilly Valley was solely crafted from the bright free run juice which shows the true purity of the fruit flavour. These soft varietal flavours of pear and green apple are mimicked by the natural acidity producing a long flavour driven finish.

A local blend sourced mostly from our cool climate Skilly Valley vineyard near the picturesque Kilikanoon cellar door with an addition from our high altitude Trillians Hill vineyard in Penwortham.

CONDITIONS With a cool growing season reminiscent of conditions of over a decade ago, the Pinot Gris bunches were monitored and sections selected at their peak desirability for the winery. The high elevation protected the Pinot Gris from late season frosts, producing even and full bunches across the vineyard. The Pinot Gris clone that is grown in our vineyard attains a crimson red colour on the vine once ripe, a characteristic that is held as desirable for the style.

WINEMAKING Once harvested, the grapes were placed into the press where they were drained and gently pressed to tank for cold settling. The racked juice was cold fermented for three weeks to retain freshness and delicate aromatics. The finished wine was then stabilised and filtered to ensure clarity and longevity.

Appearance

Pale straw with a natural slight bronze blush from the grape skin.

Nose

Bright floral jasmine and honey suckle aromas are underpinned by sweet green apple and Nashi pear notes.

Palate

Fresh and lively with a rounded texture and fine acid backbone. Flavours of fresh pear and white peach are seamlessly combined with ripe lime pith. The fruit concentration appears sweet and full; driving the palate which lingers with a clean and balanced finish.

"Lifts the Gris game with a beautifully understated style. A barely-there colour mixes with Asian pear, acacia, lime cordial scents. Could be argued that it straddles the Grigio-Gris border with its 11.5% alc., but frankly, it doesn’t matter because either way this brings real class to the glass. Light in texture, citrussy bright in acidity, the palate opens fine and tightly controlled, running pure and clean in lime, apple, gentle herbals and a lovely, persistent thread of spiciness. A delicacy of touch throughout stamps this as a must try and, at that price, a must buy." Jeni Port - Winepilot
