Kilikanoon Wines Proves Reds are Best at the Clare Valley Wine Show!

While renowned for making world class Riesling, the Clare Valley is equally building its reputation as a maker of fine red wines.  Shiraz in particular has found a worthy home here, demonstrating a power and elegance unique to the region.  At the 2020 Clare Valley Regional Wine Show Kilikanoon continued to cement its dominance as a leading red wine producer from the region.  Showcasing the latest 2018 releases, Kilikanoon walked away with three-gold medals & our Prophecy Shiraz received the trophy for ‘Best Vintage Section – Shiraz’.

Winemakers, Peter Warr & Kirby Graudins, were very excited about the quality of the wines from the 2018 vintage. In terms of white varieties, Rieslings were highly aromatic with pure and distinct regional characters, such as those displayed in the 2018 Mort’s Block Riesling. With a foundation from the original Mort’s Block Riesling Vineyard planted next to the winery, the wine not only received a Gold Medal at the Clare Valley Wine Show, it was also recently awarded a Gold Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards, showcasing the memorable and unique, Clare Valley character.

Peter continued  that when it comes to the reds from the 2018 vintage, that the general consensus is that it’s looking like one of the best in many years with fantastic colour, flavour development and tannin structures, both of which are distinct characters in our Gold Medal winning wines; 2018 Morrison Shiraz Cabernet & 2018 Prophecy Shiraz.

The 2018 Morrison Shiraz Cabernet is the inaugural vintage of a classic Australian composition, only released via our Cellar Door as a wine club exclusive wine early 2020. In February it won Gold at the Mundus Vini International Wine Awards. This wine has great definition, character and complexity, which will see it continue to evolve further complexity for years to come.

Another wine made exclusively for our wine club is the 2018 Prophecy Shiraz, a classic, Clare Valley Shiraz. Prophecy can be defined in the dictionary as ‘a prediction of what will happen in the future’. This was then carried over into the winemaking philosophy for the Prophecy Shiraz, it was ‘a wine selected by the winemakers with extended bottle age, before a release, aiming to make a prophecy about the wine getting better with age to reward our customers upon release’.

The 2018 Prophecy Shiraz was the best one he had composed yet, of which is reflective with the wine being awarded not only a Gold Medal but also in receiving the ‘Best Vintage Section – Shiraz’ at the Clare Valley Wine Show.

The Clare Wine Show is an important event which allows us to benchmark our wines against others in the region. We pride ourselves on our consistency, so it is really rewarding for our team’s hard work to be recognised.
