2016 Killerman's Run Cabernet Sauvignon - Back Vintage

Mr Killerman, as a young Mort Mitchell called him, lived alone in a humble tin shed in the hills behind the Kilikanoon cellar door. Entirely self-sufficient, he grew his own fruit and vegetables and roamed the valley for his meals with wild rabbits his favourite gourmet treat.

Mort grew to know and respect this man of the bush, learning the secrets of the land and how to become one with the environment. The Killerman's Run range of approachable wines showcases the distinguished and varied terroir of the Clare Valley and the Kilikanoon philosophy of uncompromising quality and consistency.

  • Winemaking

Our Killerman’s Run Cabernet Sauvignon has been crafted through careful fruit selection, traditional winemaking techniques, sixteen months maturation in new and seasoned French oak hogsheads and bottling unfiltered to fully enhance the wines character and appeal.

A return to the seasons of old, 2016 was an excellent vintage overall. A very dry Spring was broken by soaking rains in January and February that put the vintage back on track. Cool conditions for the most part of February finished things off well, spacing out the harvest and allowing individual fruit parcels to be harvested at their optimum ripeness.

Brick red in colour with youthful crimson hues.

Fresh lifted aromas of cassis, red fruits, hints of tobacco leaf and sublime toasty French oak notes dominate the nose.

Classic Clare Cabernet palate of red fruits, touches of mint, sweeter cassis and complimentary French oak nuances roll into one textural and rewarding flavour experience. Naturally retained acidity and fine grained tannins further enhance the wines character and ageability.

    • Some leafy nuances ahead of cassis and redcurrant aromas. A mellow, floral edge, too. The palate has plenty of ripe and nutty tannins, supporting the cassis and red berries. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

    • A testament to the reach of Kilikanoon across the Clare Valley, and of the skill of the winemaking team. This has clear-cut varietal character in a blackcurrant cassis mode backed by Cabernet tannins. Needs until the end of '18 for the pieces to lock together, but at this price that shouldn't be a major challenge.

    • Deep, dark, dense colour, with a fairly oaky bouquet, the palate adding a slather of sweet, ripe berry flavours. It's dry and savoury, but also lush, with richness, density and fleshy extract to burn. A big, generous, solid wine with ageing potential. Outstanding value.

    • Appealing nose of dark brooding fruit, sweet spice, cloves and a menthol twist. Grippy tannins on sweetly-fruited palate, dusty overtones.
