2013 Baudinet Blend GSM

Our Baudinet Blend is named after a partner in Kilikanoon, Bruce Baudinet, who owns the Clare Valley vineyard where the Shiraz and Mataro are grown.

A little warmer than the classic 2012 vintage, 2013 again delivered for the reds in Clare with the warmer ripening conditions beautifully tempered by the cooler nights, slowing down the ripening process and allowing the harvest to proceed at optimum ripeness for all three varieties.

  • Winemaking

The Baudinet Blend is a new wine for Kilikanoon and one that pays homage to our affection for French blends. Aged carefully for 16 months in well seasoned French oak and then bottled both unfined and unfiltered.

    Appearance

Brick red in colour with youthful crimson hues.

    Nose

Hints of roasted meats, dark cherries and black olives are seductively enhanced by the spicy, seasoned French oak notes.

    Palate

A seamless blend of three of the most noble grape varieties from the old world; the majority Grenache providing the vibrancy and perfume, the Shiraz the texture and robustness and the Mataro, the savoury edge, charcuterie and palate persistance. Medium bodied with fine tannins and natural acidity complete the statement.

    • Measured, stylish and deeply flavoured, this fullish to medium weight red has a densely packed, earthy bouquet of peppery aromas, bright fruits and meaty, spicy chocolatey undertones. It's smooth, juicy and generous, with a long, vibrant presence of lively fruit and meaty, chocolatey aspects underpinned by a fine, chalky backbone, finishing with softness and a lingering note of licorice.

    • There is a delightful coolness, and restraint, to the aroma. Subtle raisin and plum plus a hint of thyme. The palate is beautifully plush, with excellent flow and presence. Age has softened its edges and calmed the tannins. A balanced and harmonious wine with composure and richness.
