Walton's Block

Walton's Block | Block's Road, Leasingham, Clare Valley, South Australia, 5452 | 8.46 ha under vine

Walton's is situated in the Watervale sub-region of the Clare Valley with its classic soils of red brown earth over limestone. Initially granted to a returned serviceman after WW2, the land was planted with premium Clare Valley varieties of Riesling, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon, the vineyard is approximately 75 years old.

The grapes are dry grown, hand-pruned and hand-picked. The sprawling Grenache block at the top westerly facing hill, ripens slowly in the long sunline hours of the summer afternoons. This fruit is processed separately to produce the Walton’s Grenache.

2021 Walton 1946 Grenache

Planted in 1946, the Walton old block Grenache is a monument to the history of the Clare Valley.  These dry-grown bush vines are planted in terra rossa soils allowing excellent drainage at an elevation between 370 and 390 metres.  The westerly aspect and east/west facing rows ensures the vines are able to soak up the late summer sun while avoiding the harsh conditions of the Clare mid summer.
