This Mort’s Reserve has been held back for further bottle age and is now drinking perfectly. The 2011 has an impressive list of awards and is now further aged for a wonderful drinking experience.
Released as our finest Riesling cuveé of the vintage, the Mort’s Reserve was chosen from a single block on our famed Mort’s Block vineyard. Planted in 1970, it’s red loamy topsoil over the much deeper limestone base and east – west orientated rows are the perfect ingredients from which to craft this wine.
The 2011 vintage was one of the most challenging we have seen at Kilikanoon in our short history. Extremely cool ripening conditions over summer and until the end of the harvest period, coupled with intermittent rain throughout, created intense pressures and yield reductions. However, the protracted cool conditions allowed for one of the most intensely fl avoured and delicate Mort’s Reserve Rieslings to be released in a decade.
Watervale soils are typified by fertile red brown loams overlying limestone sub layers; soil profiles that lend themselves to growing Riesling of exceptional distinction and character. All fruit was hand harvested during late February and early March, typically yielding around the 5.0 – 6.0 tonnes per hectare.
Showcasing the most distinguished of Kilikanoon’s terroir, Mort’s Reserve Riesling is a symphony of texture and complexity. We use only hand harvested fruit and free run juice, before a long and cool ferment; crafting the unequivocal essence of Kilikanoon.
Brilliant in Clarity, almost transparent in colour with subtle green tints.
Best described as intensely floral, citrus lime and lemon scented, overtly varietal yet sensually restrained.
Full Flavoured yet delicate and precise, the palate is all fresh lime juice and lemon zest, beautifully balanced and enhanced by its piercing natural acidity.

In very special years, we carefully cut through selected fruiting canes in a section of our Mort's Block vineyard around four weeks prior to harvest. This turns off the supply of moisture to the fruit, rapidly concentrating its flavours and natural sugar content and creating a luscious, yet refreshingly crisp, dessert styled wine.Sourced from our Mort's Block vineyard, located just minutes from the winery.
The 2013 vintage conditions were perfect for producing this sought after wine. Watervale soils are typified by fertile red brown loams overlying limestone sub layers; soil profiles that lend themselves to growing Riesling of exceptional distinction and character. The 2014 vintage was a rollercoaster from start to fi nish. A period of extreme heat struck in early January placing many vineyards under stress before a quenching rain event occurred bringing over 100mm to most parts of the Clare Valley. Weather patterns shifted to a much more autumnal theme, with cool nights and and warm days slowing the ripening process down and allowing the harvest to commence in a very calm and orderly way, before heavy rain again occurred in early March. Thankfully, the Cello Riesling parcels were picked by this time and so the overall result being Rieslings of great structure and balance with high natural acidities and fruit freshness.
Pale straw with youthful green tints and brilliant clarity.
Lifted notes of citric rind, lemon curd and fl oral perfumes saturate the senses.
A lively and fl avoursome palate, offering the mouthfi lling characters of lemons, orange blossom, hints of stonefruit and zesty natural acidity in a long and cleansing finish.

Mr Killerman, as a young Mort Mitchell called him, lived alone in a humble tin shed in the hills behind the Kilikanoon Cellar Door. Entirely self-sufficient, he grew his own fruit and vegetables and roamed the valley for his meals with rabbits being his favourite gourmet treat.
Mort grew to know and respect this man of the bush, learning the secrets of the land and how to become one with the environment. The Killerman's Run range of approachable wines showcases the distinguished and varied terroir of the Clare Valley and the Kilikanoon philosophy of uncompromised quality and consistency.
Our Killerman's Run Riesling has been crafted through careful fruit selection, traditional winemaking techniques, sixteen months maturation in new and seasoned French oak hogsheads and bottling unfiltered to fully enhance the wines character and appeal.
The 2015 was overall an excellent vintage. A very dry spring was broken by soaking rains in early January that put the vintage back on track. Cool conditions for the most part of February finished things off well allowing the Riesling parcels to all retain vibrant fruit freshness and racy natural acidities.
Pale straw in colour with youthful green tints and a brilliant clarity.
Concentrated notes of grapefruit, apple blossom and limes unfurl on the nose.
Initial lime juice, zippy acidity and green apples boldly combine on the palate, nicely supported with a hint of naturally retained sweetness to further complete its lingering finish.

As a variety, Semillon is so well suited to the Clare Valley, just like Riesling, it benefits from the elevated landscapes, fertile soils and higher natural rainfall of the region. 2015 was another standout vintage, with the early, drier than average start to the growing season, saved by substantial rainfall in January and three weeks of cool weather leading up to the harvest in early February.
One hundred percent barrel fermentation and maturation for six months in new and one year old French oak barrels has complemented and enhanced the fresh varietal vineyard characteristics of the Semillon grape; citrus and cut grass. Twice weekly battonage (lees stirring) has added to the wines complexity and creamy palate structure.

In very special years, we carefully cut through selected fruiting canes in a section of our Mort's Block vineyard around four weeks prior to harvest. This turns off the supply of moisture to the fruit, rapidly concentrating its flavours and natural sugar content and creating a luscious, yet refreshingly crisp, dessert styled wine.
This cane cut technique is only practised in very special years when the ripening season is cooler and more protracted. This gives us more control over the process and ensures that the highest levels of quality can be achieved. Once the desired concentration and flavour enhancement has been reached, the grapes are selected and hand picked with any lower quality fruit rejected on the vine.
The soils of the Watervale valley are typically terra rossa: fertile red brown earth over much deeper limestone. These duplex profiles are perfect for growing Riesling, the loamy topsoils providing adequate nutrition whilst the deeper limestone layers providing good drainage, just enough water holding capacity and flavour characteristics. About four weeks before Riesling is typically harvested, we carefully cut through all of the fruiting canes that are trained along the wires, thus turning off the moisture supply to the fruit, rapidly concentrating the fruits sugar concentration and flavour.
Mid golden straw in colour with subtle green tints. Brilliant appearance and clarity.
Aromas of candied fig, fresh lime juice, glacé fruits and evolving toastiness round out the distinguished nose.
A richly layered and luscious dessert styled wine, yet beautifully balanced by naturally occurring acidity, the flavours of ripe fig, squeezed limes and honey flow through onto the palate further enhanced by the developing toastiness.

Sourced predominantly from the cooler Woodvale vineyard in the Skilly Valley and only a few hundred meters from our picturesque Kilikanoon cellar door near Penwortham.
For the most part, 2018 was a challenging vintage; a very dry spring, low summer rainfall and a dry harvest period threw up a number of challenges to both our winemaking and viticultural teams. But through careful vineyard management, attention to the finest detail and by selecting the best fruit possible, the year has turned out to be a quite a surprise package for our Skilly Pinot Gris. Intense flavours, good acid structure and strong balance hallmarks of the season.
Created in a leaner, more complex style than many fuller bodied Pinot Gris’s that are currently on the market, this predominantly Skilly Valley sourced cuvee’ was crushed and drained before a cool three week fermentation took place. The ferment cut short at the very end in order to retain a hint of natural grape sugar to give the wine some added texture.
Pale straw in colour with a few subtle ‘Gris’ tints to it with a brilliant clarity.
Layers of pear, quince and exotic spices infuse the nose, lifted and aromatic.
Riper notes of preserved pears, hints of kiwi fruit and cinnamon spices crowd out the palate, perfectly cocooned within lingering acidity and a small amount of retained sweetness that adds both texture and character to the final blend.
