Place

From our single vineyard, Trillian's Vineyard, Penwortham, Clare Valley.

Vintage Conditions

Welcomed winter rains saw this low lying block enjoyed increased vigour from recharged soils. A mild growing season provided ideal ripening conditions for flavour development and acid retention. Montepulciano being a late ripening variety and the last that we harvest, thrived under these dry and reasonably cool conditions.

Winemaking

Fermentation started spontaneously by natural yeast present in the vineyard, and lasted 16 days. The grape skins were left for an additional week in the wine to extract further colour and flavour before being basket pressed. The wine was then racked into seasoned French oak to mature for a further eighteen months adding structure and complexity.

2021 Kx Montepulciano

Overview

The Kilikanoon Experimental range or Kx for short, is an opportunity for our winemakers to try new techniques and styles of wine. Montepulciano is a relatively rare grape grown in Australia and very rare in the Clare Valley. Its spiritual home is the Abruzzo region of Italy where it produces high quality, black fruited, spicy wines.

  • Appearance

Iridescent purple with a vibrant purple hue.

  • Nose

Dark berries and stewed fruits that are underpinned by soft and fresh herbal notes emanate from the glass.

  • Palate

Mimicking the aroma, a core of dark fruits and black forest flavours fill the center of the palate. Rich and bold in flavours, the wine slowly coats that the palate as fills with the natural tannin and spice of the variety, full yet without being heavy.
