Fortified using brandy spirit halfway through ferment, the wine then spends over thirty months ageing in old oak hogsheads to impart further interest and complexity. The locations high altitude of 500 meters requires the fruit to hang well into April before harvesting for it to reach its acclaimed and luscious potential.

Creatively layered and textured, the flavours of toffee, turkish delight and aged walnuts come together in a whirlpool of increasing decadence. 2013 was another good year for Grenache; the vintage was mostly trouble free, the warm dry days and cool nights influenced by the regions unique topography and elevation promoting fruit freshness, elegance and flavour intensity. Made as a final blend from two old Watervale vineyards, each parcel was vinified separately, basket pressed and allowed to mature for 16 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads before final bottling unfined and unfiltered.

This turns off the supply of moisture to the fruit, rapidly concentrating its flavours and natural sugar content and creating a luscious, yet refreshingly crisp, dessert styled wine.

The 2013 vintage conditions were perfect for producing this sought after wine. Watervale soils are typified by fertile red brown loams overlying limestone sub layers; soil profiles that lend themselves to growing Riesling of exceptional distinction and character. All fruit was hand harvested during the middle of March, typically yielding 3.0 - 4.0 tonnes per hectare.

$44.00Our strong interest and respect for French varietals continues at Kilikanoon, with the release of our first straight Mataro. Often called by its French name, Mourvedre (we prefer the local Australian moniker), Mataro has been used by Kilikanoon since 2002, its terrific length and flavour profile instrumental in many fine GSM blends. As a single varietal, Mataro tends to be quite tarry and spicy by design, its firm yet gentle tannins are a vital piece of its personality.
The Clare Valley has proven to be an excellent place to grow Mataro, its higher elevation, warm dry climate and cool evenings during harvest are perfect conditions for creating classy, flavoursome and age worthy wines. The 2013 vintage was a great year to start the ball rolling. The fruit was picked in the cool of the early morning, fermented on skins traditionally, before basket pressing to mostly seasoned French oak hogsheads, where it matured for 18 months before being bottled unfiltered and unfined.

Our Baudinet Blend is named after a partner in Kilikanoon, Bruce Baudinet, who owns the Clare Valley vineyard where the Shiraz and Mataro are grown.
A little warmer than the classic 2012 vintage, 2013 again delivered for the reds in Clare with the warmer ripening conditions beautifully tempered by the cooler nights, slowing down the ripening process and allowing the harvest to proceed at optimum ripeness for all three varieties.
The Baudinet Blend is a new wine for Kilikanoon and one that pays homage to our affection for French blends. Aged carefully for 16 months in well seasoned French oak and then bottled both unfined and unfiltered.

$80.00A cuveé composed from 2 carefully tended old Grenache vineyards in Watervale, aged 77 and 71 years respectively. Only from the best vintages do we create our Duke Reserve Grenache. The 2013 vintage again gave us that opportunity. Being a shade warmer than the previous standout 2012 season, we picked both vineyards just a little earlier to ensure we achieved the perfect balance of flavour, acid and tannin needed in our signature Reserve Grenache. Having both vineyards managed with minimal chemical intervention, hand pruning and hand harvesting is a vital part of the natural calender of operations.
The hand picked fruit parcels were destemmed and fermented in an open topped vessel on skins until complete dryness, before basket pressing to small French oak casks to mature for 16 months. No fining or filtration were done before bottling.

$80.00With the exception of the 2011 vintage, each year since 1997 we have released the iconic Oracle Shiraz. Crafted from old vine fruit grown along the golden hillside in Leasingham, it continues to display the opulence, regional character and varietal power the valley is so renown for.
Slightly warmer and earlier than the classic 2012 vintage, 2013 was still a standout across the Clare Valley with the mildly elevated conditions beautifully tempered by the cooler nights and early mornings, lowering the average temperatures and allowing the harvest to be completed at the optimum maturity and flavour ripeness.
Low yielding Shiraz parcels were chosen across our golden hillside vineyards, vinfied separately using time honoured traditional techniques, then aged for 18 months in a selection of new and one year old French oak hogsheads. Bottling occurred without any fining or filtration.

Richly textured and brimming with character, the palate cleverly combines the ripe plum fruits and dark chocolate notes with classy French oak handling and fine grained tannins in a long and harmonius flavour experience. Whilst the wine can be enjoyed young, increased reward can be obtained through careful cellaring.

A classic Clare Valley vintage that featured warm days and cooler night temperatures, slowing down the harvest allowing both vineyards to be hand picked at their optimum levels of ripeness and maximising the development of the cassis and tobacco leaf characters, fine tannins and balanced natural acidity.
Once the hand picked fruit arrived at the winery, it was gently crushed and fermented on skins until dryness using selected, cultured yeasts. Once dry, each batch was basket pressed into a selection of new and 1 year old French oak hogsheads and allowed to mature for 18 months in our cellars. Final composition and bottling occurred without fining or filtration. This is the finest Cabernet in our portfolio with less than 3000 bottles produced.

The slightly warmer ripening conditions of 2013 has given the wine slightly more weight and tannin structure, whilst the cooling night time temperatures, further influencing the perfume and fruit length so admired of this variety.
Once again, the old adage that great wines are created in the vineyard, perfectly sums up the 2013 Kelly Grenache. Its 1932 planted pedigree, its unique location and its bush vine, hand pruned and hand picked. make the winemaking part so much easier.

$250.00This revered vineyard was planted in 1865 and it celebrates an incredible legacy and history of Australian Shiraz. Located just north or Auburn, the Attunga Vineyard is still producing fruit commercially today and in certain years is released as a single vineyard wine of widespread acclaim.
Cropping levels of just over one tonne per acre in an average year, the vineyard produces fruit that is small, concentrated and unique. Traditional management practices and techniques, including individual berry sorting at harvest time, ensures only the highest quality shiraz makes it to the winery.
