2013 Prodigal Grenache

First made back in 1997 and still definitely one of the sentimental favourites in our Kilikanoon portfolio, the Prodigal continues to set the standard for Clare Valley old vine Grenache.
2013 was another good year for Grenache; the vintage was mostly trouble free, the warm dry days and cool nights influenced by the regions unique topography and elevation promoting fruit freshness, elegance and flavour intensity. Made as a final blend from two old Watervale vineyards, each parcel was vinified separately, basket pressed and allowed to mature for 16 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads before final bottling unfined and unfiltered.

Sweet red berried fruit, yes, but much more than that. This is a wine with the ability to pick its moments. It's elegant for the most part, start and finish, but when it's time to go, it pours on the boysenberried, earthen, spice-shot spearmint flavours, ushering fine-grained, smoky tannin along with them.

Vibrant ruby-red. Energetic, highly perfumed, nose displays fresh raspberry, lavender and peppery spice scents plus a hint of mocha. Smooth and juicy on the palate, offering appealing sweet red and dark berry flavors and a touch of spicecake, with the floral note reappearing as the wine opens up. In a seamless, fruit-driven style, with excellent closing focus and supple tannins building steadily and adding shape.

Bursts of liquorice, cola and redcurrant will keep most drinkers happy. This puts runs on the board quickly and keeps the scoreboard ticking over throughout. It pours the flavours on, soft and delicious for the most part but with earthen, coffeed tannin keeping the finish neat.

A soft, smooth Burgundy styled grenache whose slightly meaty, creamy and earthy aromas of blueberries, blood plums and nutmeg reveal a hint quince. Packed with fruit, it's gentle and luscious, long and complete, with a charming length of fruit underpinned by soft, plaint tannins, finishing with a lingering meatiness.

Red berries follow through to darker fruits. There's a lot to like on the palate. Really openhearted and open-knit. The structure is there to support the fruit. Drink now to 2022.
